What we collect when you use humanconcern.org, why we collect it, and what we do — and don't do — with it.
Policy in full
Last updated 1 October 2020
Scope of this policy
At Human Concern International (“HCI”, “we”, “us”, “our”), the privacy of the people who visit humanconcern.org (the “Website”) is one of our main priorities. This policy sets out how we collect, handle and store information gathered through the Website. Please read it carefully; by using the Website you acknowledge that you have read, understood and agree to it.
This policy applies to our online activities only, and only to information shared with or collected by HCI through this Website. It does not apply to anything collected offline, or through any channel other than this Website. We may amend this policy from time to time.
Consent
By using our Website, you consent to this Privacy Policy and agree to its terms.
Information we collect
You do not need to register or give us any information in order to read this Website. Where we do ask for personal information, we will make clear at that point what we are asking for and why.
- When you contact us directly — your name, email address, phone number, the contents of your message and any attachments, and anything else you choose to include.
- When you register for an account — contact information such as your name, organisation, address, email address and telephone number.
- When you donate — the details needed to process the gift and issue your tax receipt.
How we use your information
HCI is the sole owner of information collected on this Website. We do not sell personal information collected from our Website. We use what we collect to:
- provide, operate and maintain the Website;
- improve, personalise and expand the Website;
- understand and analyse how the Website is used;
- develop new services, features and functionality;
- communicate with you — directly or through a partner — for donor care, for updates about our work, and for marketing and promotional purposes;
- send you email you have asked for;
- detect and prevent fraud.
Log files
Like every hosted website, we keep standard log files. These record IP address, browser type, internet service provider, date and time stamp, referring and exit pages, and possibly a click count. They are not linked to any personally identifiable information. We use them to analyse trends, administer the site, understand how people move through it, and gather demographic information in aggregate.
Cookies and web beacons
Like any other website, we use cookies. They store information such as your preferences and the pages you visited, and are used to optimise your experience by tailoring page content to your browser type and other information.
Payment and card security
We take every precaution to protect the security of your transaction. Donations made through this Website are secure to the fullest extent possible: we use high-grade 128-bit encryption and the HTTPS protocol over Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) to communicate with your browser. SSL protects information as it travels across the internet and is the industry-standard security protocol, making it extremely difficult for anyone to intercept the card information you send us. The companies we work with to process card transactions use high-grade encryption and security protocols of their own.
You can recognise a secure page by the padlock shown in your browser's address bar. A closed padlock means the connection is secure.
Third-party sites
This policy applies to our Website only. The site contains links to other websites that we do not operate or control, and the practices described here do not apply to them. A link from our site does not imply that we endorse or have reviewed that service. We suggest contacting those services directly about their own privacy policies.
Your choices
You can ask us at any time to tell you what personal information we hold about you, to correct it, to stop sending you marketing email, or to delete information we are not legally required to keep — donation records supporting an issued tax receipt, for example, must be retained under Canada Revenue Agency rules.
Every marketing email we send carries an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing from marketing does not affect the receipts and administrative messages attached to a donation you have made.
